When exploring potential career paths, hearing directly from people in the field is one of the most effective ways to understand what a job is really like. As part of a Career Studies course assignment, a student reached out to a professional working in their field of interest: modern woodworking.

This case study follows the career path of Mike, a graduate of a community college Woodworking Technician program, who shows how traditional craft meets modern technology.


Discovering the Craft

Because Mike holds a formal woodworking education, he has been given significant responsibility:

  • Machinery Operations: He is the primary staff member responsible for operating and maintaining the advanced machinery used in their production processes.
  • Quality Control: Ensuring that the complex production runs meet precise structural and aesthetic specifications.
  • Versatility: In addition to manufacturing, Mike applies his skills to custom builds, cabinet construction, and furniture design.

Beyond the Workshop
